Two-Week Food event Coming to the Houston Heights
Tickets are on sale now for Commune, a brand new, two-week food event that’s bringing chefs from all of the United States, right to the Houston Heights. Commune is going to be hosted by Indie Chefs, which was founded by Houston Native and local Heights resident Grover Smith. Smith put this group together with the goal of creating and editing a stronger chef community. The group has hosted week-long events in the past, but Smith says that this new Heights event is going to be the largest event Indie Chefs has hosted yet.
The event will start on August 21st and run through September 5th, and will be hosted at the new Heights House Hotel, located on Cavalcade Street. The event is going to feature collaborative dinners amongst multiple chefs, pop-up stations, chef-led classes, a street market, and more. Each night of the event will feature a different group of chefs, with their own exclusive food and beverage menus as well.
Smith said they will have three dinner events that will all go toward supporting several different causes including :
- Chefs Stopping Asian American and Pacific Islander Hate
- Embrace Race
- And an End Mass Incarceration dinner
While in many cases, chefs attending a festival like this would have to foot their own bill for airfare and accommodations, Smith insisted on covering the costs of his fellow chefs and their teams to come to the event. Smith realized many of these chefs would likely have to close their restaurants in order to attend this event, so he worked with them to cover costs during the time they were at Commune.
