10 Best Things to do in May: Heights, Montrose and River Oaks areas

Tons of great events will be hosted throughout the Heights, River Oaks and Montrose areas this May. Locals can enjoy a Mother's Day market, a bike scavenger hunt, and more.

May 6 13, 20 and 27: Children’s Bingo

Levy Park is hosting some socially distanced bingo games for kids 4-12. The Levy Park team will provide all the game materials needed to play, and prizes will be given out as well. Blankets are requested for participants.

May 7: NoTsuOh Coronation Gala

The Houston Heritage Society is hosting its annual revival of the NoTsuOh festival, which dates back to a 19th century Houston tradition. It will feature a coronation gala at The Ballroom at Bayou Place. At the gala, they will celebrate this year’s king and queen ––– king Justice Ken Wise and queen Sara Wise. Proceeds will go to the Heritage Society.

May 8: Puppies for Breakfast

Bring your pet to the outdoor party of the summer, featuring  food trucks, local vendors, add a costume contest. Bring your pup to play in the 2,500-square-foot doggie play area. This year’s

May 8: Annika Chambers at the Mucky Duck

Houston-local Annika Chambers will be singing soul and the blues, performing an in-person show at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck and virtual show as well. The virtual performance will be streamed privately through a hidden YouTube link.

May 8: Heights Mercantile Mother’s Day Market

Tons of vendors will set up shop across the Heights Mercantile shopping center. They will be offering a broad array of local crafts and gifts including jewelry, clothing, plants, home goods, baked goods, and even treats with your pets ––– all perfect for celebrating Mother’s Day. including plants, jewelry, clothing, home goods, pet treats and baked goods. 

Parking at the event will be limited, organizers said, so walking, biking and ride-sharing is encouraged.

May 12: ‘J: Beyond Flamenco’ film screening

“J: Beyond Flamenco,” is a documentary, created with the direction of Carlos Saura. The film is about the traditional Spanish (Specifically Aragon) dance and folk music of his homeland.

May 14-16: Art Car Experience

The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art is hosting 3 days and 2 nights of activities on its multi-acre campus. Day time entertainment includes 80 on display art cars, craft stations for kids, and walking tours. 

Nightly activities include live music, food, drinks, fun costumes, and illuminated art cars. 

Price: $10 for adults and $5 for children. Night passes for 7-11 PM are $40.

May 16: Rain Barrel Sale

Orders your rain barrel up until May 16 for the big semi annual sale. The $52 barrels are sold out, but you can still order $72 barrels. Residents can jump on the waitlist for future rain barrel sale opportunities as well. If you are interested in larger barrels, the 50-gallon barrels sell for $129. You must pick up your rain barrels in person on May 22.

May 29-31: Heights Bicycle Rally & Scavenger Hunt

The Houston Heights Association will host its annual bicycle scavenger hunt. The event will feature a 5 mile route and a 15 mile route. 

Participants will get a map and a variety of clues that will help guide them on the route. You must complete and submit your entry form to the Houston Heights Fire Station on May 31st, by 5 PM. 

Pricing: $30 for 15 miles. $20 for 5 miles. You can get an early bird discount of $5 per ticket if you register before May 22.
