River Oaks Theatre Reopens Thanks to Community Support

The historic River Oaks Theatre will reopen! The new owners of the shopping center where the theatre is located, Kimco Realty, announced the news at a press conference on February 2nd.

Kimco officials announced they had come to an agreement with Houston-based Star Cinema Grill to lease the space. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner attended the press conference.

The River Oaks Theatre first opened its doors in 1939 and closed in 2021. When Kimco Realty purchased the center in late 2021, they realized the "coolness" of the area and the theatre. Mayor Turner and Houston City Council members reported that their offices were flooded with letters, emails and calls from Houstonians who did not want to see the theatre shut down.

The exact date of the reopening was not announced.
