Houston Named Number 1 for the Busiest Home Construction Market in the US

New single-family homes are being built left and right, in the greater Houston Metro Area. So much so that Houston has recently established itself as the number-one busiest home construction market in the United States.

Recent research from the National Association of Home Builders indicated that the Houston Metro Area issued over 48,000 construction permits for single-family homes, in 2020. That staggering number was more than any other metropolitan area in the country, including other booming housing markets like Dallas-Fort Worth (43,884 permits) and Austin (21,653 permits).

Even in spite of the recent winter storms, homebuilders are having trouble keeping up with the astronomical demand for single-family homes in the Houston market. The Texas Real Estate Research Center reported that across the entire state of Texas, the demand for single-family homes shot up by 18.9% from 2019 to 2020. Houston alone grew by 20.2%.

Real estate specialists connect this real estate boom with the spike in population growth we’ve seen over the last year, along with record-low mortgage rates. They also estimate that this has been accelerated by aging millennials entering the housing market, the transition to a work-from-home economy, and new residents moving to Texas from other states.

Homebuilders are attempting to keep up with the demand by continuing to build lower-priced home categories along the outside borders of Houston while expanding new home developments out into the suburbs as well.
